Silverio A. Vega has been a resident of the Town of West New York for over 30 years, having emigrated in 1967 at the age of 10 from Cardenas, Cuba with his family. He is a graduate of Memorial High School, and possesses a Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Tennessee in Physical Education.
“Sal,” as his friends call him, is a school administrator for the West New York Board of Education. Since 1987 he has been Athletic Director for his alma mater, Memorial High School, where he directs a fine athletic program.
Sal Vega is an experienced legislator in both appointed and elected positions. He has served as a Legislative Aide to New Jersey State Senator Bernard Kenny. Previously, Vega had been appointed to the Board of Adjustments and the Rent Control Board by the Town of West New York, and to the Board of Trustees of the Hudson County Schools of Technology (née Vocational-Technical). Currently, Sal Vega is a Commissioner for the Town of West New York, serving as Public Safety Director since 1995. Previously, Vega was the director of the Department of Revenue & Finance, from 1991 to 1995.
Beginning his fourth elected term, Vega reprises his chairperson role for the 2003 Board. Freeholder Chairman Vega has made the Hudson County Budget a priority, in keeping with his previously stated policy of producing lean budgets. The Chairman also has kept his promise to open county government to the people by providing night meetings on a regular basis, some of which have been held in different municipalities throughout the county.
Chairman Vega represents the freeholder interests for the Hudson County Schools of Technology as a Member of the Hudson County Board of School Estimate, and for the Community College as a Member of the Hudson County Community College Board of School Estimate. He also serves as Chairman of the following committees: Finance, Budget and Administration; Insurance Commission; Public Safety and Department of Corrections; and as Alternate on the New Jersey Association of Counties (NJAC). He serves as a Member on the Economic Development and Housing Committee;
Active in all communities inhabiting his district, Sal has received a number of appreciation awards from many civic and political groups. A father of one daughter, Kristen, community service wouldn’t have much meaning to Sal if his involvement didn’t include children. By sponsoring a Little League team, Sal Vega’s, the Freeholder keeps his finger on the pulse of the new developments within the “kiddies” culture. For his efforts, Sal received an Appreciation Award, complete with laminated team photo, in 1996.
If education is key to a better life, then Sal Vega has made sure that the children of Hudson County have the opportunity of getting the best education possible. As a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Hudson County Schools of Technology (HCST), Sal has contributed his considerable expertise as a career educator. In acknowledgment of that effort, Sal received an Appreciation Award from HCST in 1995, the year the school was chosen as “One of the Best Overall High Schools” in the State of New Jersey.
