Well-known for his altruistic, community-based activism, Brian P. Stack is a lifelong resident of the City of Union City, and attended St. Anthony’s and Edison Grammar Schools. Brian graduated from Emerson High School and majored in Criminal Justice at Jersey City State College.
Although the role of freeholder is his first foray into county government, Freeholder Stack is no stranger to the legislative branch of government. He first served as an aide to the Assemblyman of the 33rd Legislative District from 1983-84 and from 1986-88, with an alternating position of administrative assistant to the Union City Commissioner for Parks & Public Property from 1986-90. After several years’ break, Stack returned to city government as Confidential Secretary to the Union City Mayor from 1994-95, and then, Deputy Director of Public Affairs, from 1995-96.
Brian Stack was elected in his own right as Union City Commissioner for one term, serving from 1997-98, with responsibilities for Revenue & Finance. In Stack was appointed to serve a vacant spot on the Union City Board of Commissioners, replacing Mayor Raul Garcia, subsequently, Stack was named Mayor by the Board of Commissioners. In June of 2003, he won the Democratic nomination to the Assembly in the 33rd Legislative District.
For the 2003 Board, Freeholder Stack chairs the Task Force on Homeless Committee and serves as Chairperson and Liaison of the Workforce Investment Board. He also serves as a Member on the following committees: Economic Development and Housing; Tourism and Cultural Affairs; and Senior Citizens and Veterans Affairs.
Brian’s homegrown community activism began when he was just 17, not an uncommon sight in Hudson County. A Union City tenant advocate since 1985, Brian has been sponsor and organizer of the Union City Downtown Children’s Christmas Fund from 1987 to the present. Over 25,000 toys and gifts have been distributed to the less fortunate families of Union City, making the holiday much brighter for both the recipient families, as well as the Freeholder’s. He, of course, is the standard-bearer of the Brian P. Stack Civic Association, which was established in 1996.
Freeholder Stack was the recipient of the 1996 Community Service Award presented by The Jersey Journal and the Kiwanis Club of North Hudson. He also was honored in Trenton with a Joint Legislative Resolution in tribute to his record of service, leadership and commitment to the community in the “Man of the Year” Ceremonies, held in June, 1996.
The son of Margaret and Edward J. Stack, Brian is happily married for 14 years to Katia, who is of Hispanic origin and also known for her very giving nature.
