With 18 years' experience in elective office, two-term freeholder Thomas F. Liggio brings a wealth of knowledge within the sphere of revenue and finance. He served as a commissioner in the Township of North Bergen, bearing those responsibilities, for three-and-one-half terms, filling mid-term during a recall election in 1985. His subsequent re-elections in 1987, 1991, and 1995 were not repeated in 1999 in order to run for the position of freeholder.
For the 2003 Board, Freeholder Liggio was elected Chairman Pro Tempore, serves as a Member of the Hudson County Planning Board and chairs both the Purchasing Committee and the Environment, Health and Human Services Committee. He serves as a member of the following committees: Contract Review, Personnel, Public Resources, and Transportation.
Freeholder Liggio possesses an M.B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck campus, and a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He spent his childhood in the Town of West New York and graduated from St. Joseph's High School. Currently Director of Compliance for the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority, Liggio's employment background encompasses over 20 years in the private sector in businesses such as Pepsico, Litton Industries and Hackensack Water Company.
This 40-year resident of North Bergen and his wife Jeanette have three grown children: a married daughter, Joanne Smith; and two sons, Frank, who is an orthopedic surgeon; and Thomas, a Supervisor in North Bergen High. Tom and Jeanette have eight grandchildren. With a golf club in one hand, and the other in town community affairs, Tom keeps himself busy. Low-key by nature, Freeholder Liggio is utilizing his financial background in keeping county taxes stable and to continue the progress being made by the County in education, senior citizen affairs, parks and recreation, and community development.
