Office on Aging

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to promote independence, dignity and choice by assisting and advocating for Hudson County seniors (60+) and their caregivers through the development and delivery of home and community-based support services and programs. The Office on Aging is a critical link between seniors and the wide range of programs that provide important services to our Hudson County Senior Community. These include maintaining a service network capable of meeting the health, economic and social needs of older adults in Hudson County, with a particular emphasis on serving those seniors of greatest social and economic need, including low- income minority older individuals with limited English proficiency.

Who We Are:

Hudson County Office on Aging was designated by the State of New Jersey as an Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and has been serving Hudson County seniors since 1974.  The AAA exists to serve as the primary advocate, planning and coordinating agency for Hudson County seniors and their caregivers. Using Older Americans Act (OAA) funds together with other government support, the Hudson County Office on Aging provides our vulnerable senior population with critical social, health, and economic programs and services to improve quality of life.  The main objective of the HCAAA is to assist Hudson County’s underserved aging population in obtaining the necessary programs and services to maintain their independence and dignity in non-institutionalized settings.

The Office on Aging also promotes healthy living for Hudson County seniors by operating as a central point for seniors to obtain health promotion information regarding diabetes, long-term health care, maintaining independence, disease and injury prevention, and how to utilize existing resources in more cost-effective ways to improve their quality of life.  The HCAAA, in collaboration with municipal senior affairs offices, sponsor other services that include recreational activities, annual senior luncheons, summer cruises, and a senior art show.

All residents of Hudson County, 60 years of age and older and their caregivers, are eligible for services.  However, emphasis is placed on the Older American’s Act provision to serve those seniors of greatest social and economic need, including our underserved minority populations with limited language proficiency.

The Office on Aging works in collaboration with our community-based providers to help coordinate necessary services and referrals.

Our service goals include:

  • Promoting healthy living for Hudson County seniors by operating as a central point for seniors to obtain health promotion information regarding diabetes, long-term health care, maintaining independence, disease and injury prevention, and how to utilize existing resources in more cost-effective ways to improve their quality of life;
  • Maintaining a service network capable of meeting the health, economic and social needs of older adults in Hudson County, with a particular emphasis on assisting those underserved populations who are considered frail, economically disadvantaged or vulnerable; and
  • Providing other services that include recreational activities, annual senior luncheons, summer cruises, and a senior art show, in collaboration with municipal senior affairs offices.

The Office on Aging/ADRC works in collaboration with our community-based providers to help coordinate necessary services and referrals.  These services include:

Access Services: Programs designed to assist clients in accessing senior programs. These programs include transportation, information and assistance, benefits   screening and care management.

Home Services: Programs such as certified home health aides, housekeeping, hospice and respite, and residential maintenance. These programs are designed to help keep clients at home and in a personal, individual environment.

Community Services: Programs available in the community to assist seniors coping with issues of aging. These programs include medical day care, dental services, education, physical fitness, and legal services.

Nutrition Support Services: These programs include congregate meals and home-delivered meals, nutrition education and counseling. Hot meals are made available for those seniors who are unable to prepare fully nutritious meals and are in need of social contact.

Caregiver Support Programs: Programs identified above available to seniors during occasions that caregivers, who may normally provide services, are unable to do so. These programs provide respite services to the caregivers of seniors, whether the caregiver is a spouse, a child, a neighbor, or a friend.
