JERSEY CITY,NJ —The Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development is pleased to present “From Across the River,” a powerful and deeply moving photography exhibition by photographer Sandra Swieder, The exhibition will be on view in the Brennan Gallery located in the Hudson County Justice William J. Brennan Court House, 583 Newark Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07306 from September 27, 2011 through October 14, 2011.  “From Across the River” documents the tragic events of 9/11 as seen from the Jersey side of the Hudson River.

To date, no exhibit, book, or documentary examines this particular aspect of the events.

An Opening Reception will be held on Tuesday September 27, 2011 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 pm.  In addition to the opening reception an Evening Panel Discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 5th from 6-8pm in the gallery.  The panel will consist of representatives from different segments of the population who were called on or volunteered to aid New Yorkers either injured or fleeing from lower Manhattan to safety across the Hudson River. The panel discussion is free and open to the public and will be held in the Brennan Gallery.

During the weekend of the Jersey City Studio Tour, October 1st and 2nd, the exhibit will be open to the public and will include screenings of the Ms. Swieder’s documentary featuring people involved with 9/11 rescue  operations. The short video will be screened several times throughout that weekend.  Live musical performances are also scheduled for the weekend of the Jersey City Studio Tour on October 1 & 2.

“It is extremely important to preserve the history of events that transpired on the Jersey side.” said, Ms. Swieder. “This project illustrates what took place along the Hudson River and how New Jersey responded to the immediate needs of lower Manhattan that Tuesday morning and in the days, weeks and months following. ‘From Across the River’ seeks to pay tribute to the victims of the Garden State and to capture a moment when ordinary people became players in their nation’s history.”

“From Across the River” has been partially funded by Thomas A. DeGise, Hudson County Executive, the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development.

The Brennan Gallery is a fully accessible venue and is located three blocks from the Journal Square PATH Station.  There will be free parking available in the lot to the side of the building for all events connected with the exhibition.
