The Correctional Center shall meet or exceed all New Jersey Department of Corrections standards for adult county correctional facilities and shall strive for American Correctional Association Accreditation.

The philosophy of the Hudson County Correctional Center shall be ethically sound and provide dignity and respect with a positive atmosphere for the staff, inmates, visitors and the community. The philosophy is based on the following principles:

  1. Society has the right to protect our citizens and communities.
  2. All inmates and staff shall be held accountable for their actions.
  3. The Hudson County Correctional Center shall provide the programming which shall allow the inmates the opportunity to improve their physical, emotional and educational status to promote the successful reintegration of the inmate into the community.

Hudson County Corrections utilizes Direct Supervision Management. Direct Supervision, utilizing the principals of direct officer to inmate interface and barrier free design, has proven to be an effective method of control, improving supervision, reducing violence, ensuring a safer more humane environment for both inmates and staff while keeping the cost to the taxpayers down.

Key Elements of Direct Supervision

  • Safety
  • Supervision
  • Control
  • Effective Personnel
  • Communications
  • Manageability of the Institution
  • Just and Fair Treatment

Direct Supervision is a jail philosophy, a more modern and humane approach over a traditional linear-style (bars) institution. Direct Supervision philosophy is a combination of management style and architectural design which facilitates increased staff and inmate contact and works to reduce tension and improve security within the correctional setting.
